Road News affecting Champion Park

Traffic Tubes on Troxel and Leslie
You may have noticed the double traffic tubes out there this week. At the request of a Champion Park Resident (Thank you), ACHD is checking traffic on these streets for speed and volume. If they find an inordinate proportion of traffic speeding excessively on these streets, the information will be passed on to Meridian Police for action.

Widening of Ustick and Traffic Light at Troxel … yes, but not Soon
A Project Manager for ACHD confirmed today that a traffic signal is warranted for this intersection, and included in the plan for the widening of Ustick from Leslie to Locust Grove. The widening project has been set back due to budgets, however,  and is currently not scheduled until 2015.  On the bright side, the design work for the expansion has been completed, so the project could be moved up if money becomes available. This project will follow the expansion of the Ustick/ Locust Grove intersection.  For more information on this project see http://www.achdidaho.org/Projects/PublicProject.aspx?ProjectID=17 .

MacMillan/ Locust Grove Intersection Expansion
ACHD is scheduled to start work on this $3 Million Project in December. This project will affect parents who routinely drive to Heritage Middle or Rocky Mountain High Schools, or anyone else who use this intersection regularly. The project will take around 8 months to complete.

2010 Fence Maintenance Complete

Our annual fence maintenance was completed this week. This is currently our 3rd largest annual expense as we work to maintain the overall fence and improve it in sections. This year, we replaced nearly 1,400 lineal feet of 1/8” stapled lattice with 1/4” glued and stapled cedar Lattice. The 1/8” is not durable and much of it was falling apart as the staples were no longer biting the wood. This year, we had all of the lattice pre-painted both sides to increase its longevity. The installed cost of this part of the project is about $3.50 per foot. My expectation is that it will be 3 to 4 years before we get it all changed out to 1/4” and that will help reduce the annual cost

The other major fence maintenance item we completed was a re-paint 300’  of fence on the oldest Micro-paths in the neighborhood from Van Oker to Conner and Bowman to Nakano. Since we also completed the Lattice conversion in these sections, I expect them to last a while. You may notice that both sides of the fence back to the house fronts are painted to improve the improve that overall look of the neighborhood.

We made one large and one small Landscape change this year to help our fences last and to keep the cost down. The large one was the new landscaping adjacent to the Leslie entrance. We observed last year that the fencing degrades far more slowly when sheltered by plants, so that was a big part of the decision to invest in that berm. The second, much more modest change is that we had Idaho Landscape put down a 6 inch “kill strip”  adjacent to the fence to keep from trimming right against the fence.

The total cost of the project was over $8000, a little more than we planned due to an increase in the lattice requirement and some wind damage from the storm a couple of weeks ago.

If you have property which is bordered by a common area fence, you can help keep our costs (and dues) down by following these steps.
1) Keep earth and Rock from building along the fence. Earth retains moisture, accelerating rot, and rock pushing against the fence tends to break posts
2) Do not allow vines to grow grow on the fence. The fence doesn’t stand a chance
3) Place a “kill strip along the fence on the inside to keep you from having to trim against the fence
4) If you have a dog that has a tendency to jump against the fence, place something near the corners of your corners to make it more difficult for them to reach.

Your co-operation is appreciated!

Damage from Winds on Saturday Night

The neighborhood suffered some minor damage to fencing and trees due to the high winds blowing through the valley on Saturday night. Please contact us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) if you know of damage to neighborhood assets.
So far, we know about some of the Plum trees near Nakano and Leslie pushing over, a large branch breaking off at Nakano and Dixon and fence breaks across from the pond and on Connelly off Garber.

8/21/2010 Irrigation off

Our Irrigation Pumps are down due to what appears to be an electrical fault.
The pump company was out this morning and it appeared to be fixed. However, it is down again so we will get them back on Monday.

Fence Maintenance Second Half of August

The Fence Contractor will be starting work on the common area fences approximately August 13.
As usual, we are doing required minor maintenance across the the neighborhood, replacing particularly bad lattice, boards and broken posts.
This year we will be doing an upgrade to 1/4” lattice and full painting on the 2 Micropaths in Champion Park 1.
A change from last year is that the boards and lattice will be prepainted both sides. We apologize if this inconveniences those of you who have a different color on the inside, but it will help the fence last longer.

Please co-operate will the contractor when he is advises you that he’ll be working on your fence by keeping the area clear and pets indoors.

Champion Parks 2nd National Night Out was a Great Success!!

Last Night, August 3rd, Champion Park held its second National Night Out celebration. Over 50 Families came out to the Park to get to know their neighbors and to share some fun and food.
Carol Corrie helped Cindy Penfold, our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, mobilize her Block Captains to get the word out and to organize the event. Bruce Reager gave folks have a reason to visit. (Ask your neighbors about spiderman, Betty White and Cinderella who all spent time with us!).
The Kids had a great time in the bouncy houses supplied by Russ Trone, eating cotton candy that Jim Brady made, working on Sidewalk Art and decorated Bicycles that were judged by Bike Patrol officer Terry Lester, and the Meridian Fire and K-9 patrol also came by to visit and display the really fun side of their jobs.
We want to thank Domino’s Pizza for their donation of many delicious Pizza’s and everyone who brought a side dish. They we GREAT!!

Congratulations to our Feature Home for June

Congratulations to our Feature Home for June

Congratulations to the Stowes at 3741 Dixon on being chosen as Champion Park’s Feature Home for June. Years of hard work have paid off with a beatiful display of perennials that gave them the edge in our beautiful yard for June.

Fence Stain Color

We were asked at the Annual meeting the color of the fence stain so individuals can match the new boards that are added. I’ve been advised that Sherwin -Williams on Fairview will supply the matching color on a request for “Champion Park Fence Stain”

New Landscaping across from the Pond

If you enter or leave on Leslie Way, you probably have seen Idaho landscape working on the common area across from the Irrigation Pond. We are adding a strip of Landscaping similar to what we have along Troxel. This feature will serve to dress up the approach to Leslie, where up until now the view has been 350 feet of fenceline. The second purpose is the trees and shrubbery will protect this south facing fence from the ravages from the sun, saving us the cost of more frequent maintenance and staining. Last fall we had to stain this fence although it is less than 4 years old.
We can expect to see this completed within a week or so.

Welcome Ron Cornwell as the newest member of the Champion Park HOA Board of Directors

Ron Cornwell consented to join the Board of Diectors at the March 23, 2010 Board Meeting .
Carol Corrie and Cleon Pilon will remain on the Board for the 2010 term.
Thanks to all who came to the meeting.

Irrigation Pond on Leslie

Please be mindful that this is not a swimming hole (for dogs or children), a place for fishing, or a place for ice skating.  It would also be helpful if you encouraged your children to NOT throw the cobble (rocks) from the banks into the water or onto the ice.  The estimate to replace the cobble is over $1000 and it does serve a purpose as the wall of the irrigation pond.  Signs will be placed around the pond in the coming weeks to this end.
